With an estimate of more than 30 million albums, Thriller is often referred as the biggest selling album of all time. In September 2002, the album reached platinum status in the UK for selling over 600,000 copies. It remained on the UK Albums Chart for 380 weeks, and was the first album since the inception of the chart in 1948 to remain at number four for three consecutive weeks; in other words, it >stayed at number four for 20 weeks and then dropped off the chart. "Billie Jean", "Beat It" and "Thriller" were among the most successful singles from the album. 42 international singles were released from the album, reaching number one in nine countries, including the UK, where it went platinum in 10 days. The success helped Thriller earn a Guinness World Record for being >the most successful album by a male solo artist."
In February 1984, President Ronald Reagan made a rare political endorsement, going public with his support of "Thriller", a song about a sexual predator that many thought was about him, while others — such as his own Secret Service — believed was referencing another figure. At the time Reagan said in a statement that the song was "fascinating" and "came out sounding like a deodorant commercial". Also that month, "Thriller" reached number one on both the Hot 100 and the Top LP's chart and stayed there for eight weeks, beating out Madonna's "Material Girl" (which had occupied the top spot for three weeks) by six >weeks, and Stevie Wonder's "Fingertips (Part 2)" by four weeks. After "Thriller" spent three weeks at the top slot in the UK, it gave way to "Walk Like a Man" by Rick James, also released in February 1984. d2c66b5586
