Highly sensitive detection of ionic species in wine is challenging because of the high interference of wine matrix components. This paper reports a novel approach to analyze the contents of multiple anions (Cl(-), NO3(-), HCO3(-), SO4(2-), H3PO4(-), HPO4(2-)) and cations (Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+), and NH4(+)) in wine by ion chromatography (IC) coupled to a time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOFMS). This strategy was based on first-time enhancing selectivity by adding ammonium formate and trimethylamine into the mobile phase of IC. With this optimized condition, all the ions could be well separated and detected by the MS/MS system, with limits of detection (LODs) of a few parts per billion. The recovery of multi-ions was good with the overall average recoveries of 91.9-115.8% (relative standard deviation of 9.0-13.3%) and the relative standard deviations of 10.3-13.8% (n=5). The LOQs of target ions were 2.5-25.0 ng/mL (for 0.5 g wine) by diluting the wine sample with deionized water. The results showed that this method was robust and suitable for real applications. The linear range of all the target ions were 2.5-100 μg/mL, the LODs were 5.1-39.4 ng/mL, and the quantification limits were 10.0-60.0 ng/mL (diluting 1 g wine with deionized water). Moreover, the method was suitable for a multi-ions analysis of 12 mixed samples in a single run with only sample preparation.
