The first North American reproduction lathe, built by and for the Herbert D. Barnard Co., of Brownsville PA, was numbered 735 on the flange of the tailstock end. The original serial number was stamped in England on the left hand side of the bed and was never removed. The first North American number was on the right hand side of the bed on the tailstock casting near the tailstock centerline. Later applications were stamped on the wood block of the tailstock casting and were removed on all later models. The lathe castings of the tailstock were numbered from the left hand side, not the right side as shown in the schematic layout.
The numbering, which began in July, 1910, ran from 700 to 657 for the 6 1/4" lathes, from 657 to 571 for the 6 1/4" lathe with back-pressure feed and cutter gear, from 571 to 546 for the 5 1/4" lathe with back-pressure feed and cutter gear, and from 546 to 508 for the single turret lathes with helical-gear feed.
South Bend build all their lathes to the exact same specifications, not counting the small variations in headstock length, tapers etc. That makes it possible to use parts from almost any old machine. We have many of the parts for all the South Bend 9a lathes from 1940-1942. South Bend 9a lathes were built in quantities of 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, and 5000. On many machines, the serial numbers begin with 703, 728, 749, etc.
The original serial number was stamped on the tailstock end of the bed between the flat- and v-ways. It was used to determine the size and type of lathe, plus any special features or attachments. The earliest records show that lathes were numbered sequentially, beginning with 700, in July, 1910, and ending with 186,514 March, 1947. d2c66b5586
