The man says, "Son, give me the money you have deposited with the Beckwiths". He counts out the money and puts it in his pocket. He says, "Now I will write you a letter of reference, and send you to the Beckwiths as a man of good character. I suppose the Beckwiths will extend you credit. You can go to them on the assurance of this letter. You may use it in case you can't get credit with them. They are a good deal better than they seem to be".
Next morning Solly trails Walt to the Beckwiths. He told him to go and talk with Mr. and Mrs. Beckwith and arrange to work for them for the winter, and they would make Walt comfortable. He would take care of Walt's horse and buy him feed. Oh yes, they would give him a good breakfast and supper every day and plenty of meat after supper. They had never known such luck! He would take Walt on as a partner, so that he might do something with the team. They would pay off most of his debts.
But, Walt was such a good boy that they wouldn't even let Solly sell the horse. Walt seemed so pleased with the forebearance of those two men that he got a false idea of their virtue. He paid his debts and prided himself upon being a good boy. He insisted upon erecting a big placard on his claim, announcing that the land was "open and available." He ordered a store put up, stocked it with groceries, and opened for business. Solly then told him that he had made a mistake. They would never give them credit. They would accept anything they were able to pay, but they wouldn't take his account. If he would go up to Dawson to his own lawyer for a paper on which to write them a receipt, they would not charge him for the groceries. Solly arranged for a ticket, and got him a steerage passage on a steamboat to Dawson, and then let him have a draft on the bank for the steamer fare, the balance of his money. He visited Mrs. John Beckwith if she was at home, and then hurried to town to get his lawyer to draw the papers. d2c66b5586
